Op vrijdag 24 november 2023 vindt in de Koninklijke Academie voor Nederlandse Taal- en Letterkunde (KANTL) in Gent het jaarlijkse Taal-en-Tongval-symposium plaats. Het thema is Laboratoriumsociolinguïstiek en gaat op zoek naar antwoorden op theoretische en methodologische uitdagingen in het onderzoek naar taalvariatie en taalverandering. De laboratoriumsociolinguïstiek bouwt verder op het bestaande taalvariatieonderzoek en gaat hand in hand met recente ontwikkelingen binnen en buiten de sociolinguïstiek (Van de Velde et al. 2021). Het theoretische doel van laboratoriumsociolinguïstiek is om de interactie tussen linguïstische, sociale en cognitieve mechanismen bloot te leggen die het proces van taalvariatie naar taalverandering sturen (zie bijv. Principles of Linguistic Change van Labov; de ontwikkeling van de cognitieve sociolinguïstiek in Vlaanderen onder impuls van Geeraerts). Deze mechanismen worden bestudeerd door te focussen op hoe we variatie produceren, percipiëren, verwerken en verwerven en hoe die primair individuele cognitieve processen gerelateerd zijn aan variatie- en veranderingsprocessen in de taalgemeenschap en de taal als systeem.

Methodologisch gezien focust deze benadering in eerste instantie op experimenteel onderzoek in een gecontroleerde (laboratorium)setting en kwantitatieve methodes. Daarbij wordt verder gebouwd op inzichten uit traditioneel sociolinguïstisch onderzoek (gebaseerd op veldwerk en corpora). Dit maakt het mogelijk om de productie-, verwerkings- en verwervingsmechanismen met adequate controle van taalinterne en -externe factoren in beeld te brengen.

Met dit colloquium willen we onderzoekers samenbrengen die hun onderzoek naar taalvariatie en -verandering in de Lage Landen willen voorstellen en met andere onderzoekers in debat willen gaan over theoretische aspecten van de studie van taalvariatie en -verandering, inclusief de meertalige en ontwikkelingsdimensie, en over de voor- en nadelen van laboratoriumbenaderingen in de (socio)linguïstiek. We verwelkomen zowel bijdragen die verslag uitbrengen van experimenteel onderzoek, als die van meer theoretische en methodologische aard. De duur van de presentaties is maximaal 20 minuten (exclusief discussie).

Samenvattingen van bijdragen (300-500 woorden) kunnen tot 30 juni 2023 worden ingediend in de vorm van een bijlage via een e-mail naar taalentongval2023@gmail.com. U dient daarbij uw naam en affiliatie(s), en die van eventuele co-auteurs, in de e-mailtekst te vermelden. Samenvattingen kunnen worden ingediend in het Nederlands of Engels. De selectie wordt midden juli bekend gemaakt.

We verwelkomen dit jaar Chris Montgomery (University of Sheffield), Thomas St. Pierre (Universiteit Utrecht) en Ellen Simon (Universiteit Gent) als onze keynotesprekers. De samenvattingen van hun lezingen vindt u hier.

Traditiegetrouw zal er een special issue van Taal- en Tongval verschijnen.

Inschrijving voor het colloquium vindt plaats via dit formulier (gratis voor BA/MA-studenten en leden van de redactie, €25 voor anderen). U kunt zich hierbij extra aanmelden voor de lunch (€15, ook voor BA/MA-studenten). Inschrijving is mogelijk t/m vrijdag 17 november 2023. Vóór aanvang van het congres dient u de conference fee te betalen die op uw inschrijving van toepassing is (zie het inschrijvingsformulier). The annual Taal-en-Tongval symposium will take place in the Royal Academy for Dutch Language and Literature (KANTL) in Ghent on Friday November 24^th, 2023. The conference theme is Laboratory sociolinguistics and explores answers to theoretical and methodological challenges in research on language variation and change. The program can be found here.

Laboratory sociolinguistics builds upon existing variationist research and goes hand in hand with recent developments within and outside sociolinguistics (Van de Velde et al. 2021). From a theoretical perspective, the goal of laboratory sociolinguistics is to investigate the linguistic, social and cognitive mechanisms that drive processes of language variation and change (see e.g. Principles of Linguistic Change by Labov; the development of cognitive sociolinguistics in Flanders spearheaded by Geeraerts). These mechanisms are studied by focussing on how we produce, perceive, process and acquire variation and how these primarily individual cognitive processes are linked to processes of variation and change in the linguistic community and in the language system.

Methodologically, this approach principally focuses on experimental research in a controlled (laboratory) setting and on quantitative methods, thereby building upon insights from traditional sociolinguistic research (based on fieldwork and corpora). These methods allow us to identify the mechanisms behind production, perception and acquisition with adequate control of both language internal and external factors.

This colloquium aims to bring together researchers who wish to present their work on language variation and change in the Low Countries and to join in the debate on theoretical aspects of the study of language variation and change, including multilingualism and language acquisition, and the advantages and disadvantages of laboratory approaches in (socio)linguistics. We invite both contributions that report on experimental research, as well as those providing a more theoretical and methodological perspective. Presentations have a maximum duration of 20 minutes (excluding discussion).

Abstracts (300-500 words) can be submitted until June 30^th, 2023, in the form of an email attachment to taalentongval2023@gmail.com. You are requested to state your name and affiliation in the email, as well as those of any co-authors. Abstracts can be written in Dutch or English. The selection will be announced by mid July.

We welcome Chris Montgomery (University of Sheffield), Thomas St. Pierre (Utrecht University) and Ellen Simon (Universiteit Gent) as keynote speakers this year. The abstracts of their talks can be found here.

Following the tradition, a special issue will appear in the Taal en Tongval journal.
